काशी नगरी मोक्षदायिनी नगरी है, इसलिए अन्य तीर्थों से कहीं ज्यादा इसका महत्व है।काशी नगरी तीन खंडों में बटीं है -1-ओंकार खण्ड  २- विश्वेश्वर खण्ड और ३- केदार खण्ड।Kashi Nagari is Mokshadayini Nagar, so it is more important than other pilgrimages. इन तीनों का अपना अपना विशेष महत्व है,परन्तु तीनों खण्डों में सबसे ज्यादा महत्व केदार खण्ड का है। इस भाग में भगवान भोलेनाथ अपनी सभी शक्तियों के साथ १५ कलाओं से भक्त शिरोमणि महाराजा मान्धाता की तपस्या से प्रसन्न होकर अन्न के लिंग के रूप में विराजमान हैं। भगवान भोलेनाथ का यह स्वयंभू लिंग हरिहरात्मकशिवशक्त्यात्मक है, जो श्री गौरीकेदारेश्वर (केदारजी) नाम से प्रसिद्ध है।

इस शिव लिंग के दर्शन पूजन मात्र से पांच देवों (शिव,पार्वती, विष्णु,लक्ष्मी एवं अन्नपूर्णा) के दर्शन का फल स्वतः प्राप्त होता है।These three have their own special significance, but the three important sections of the three sections are of Kedar section. In this part, Lord Bholenath, with his all the powers, is pleased with the 15 art of the devotees, sitting in the form of the pen of food by being pleased with the meditation of the Shiromani Maharaja Mandhata. This self-sacrificing sex of Lord Bholenath is a hariharapatakitishvashaktiyak, which is popularly known as Shri Gaurikadevswar (Kedarji).The philosophy of this Shiva Linga is the result of the philosophy of five Gods (Shiva, Parvati, Vishnu, Lakshmi and Annapurna) automatically.

मन्दिर का महात्म्य(The glory of the temple -) -

सतयुग की कथा है।उस समय हिमालय पर्वत पर सर्वभौम महाराजा मान्धाता जिनकी यश कीर्ति पुराणों में महायोगी,महादानी और अपने पिता के कुक्षिभेदन से जन्म प्राप्ति के  रूप में किया है। शिव लिंगम् के दर्शन के लिए १००युगों तक निरंतर तपस्या में रहे।तक जाकर भगवान शिव ने प्रसन्न होकर उन्हें काशी जाकर तपस्या करने के लिए आकाशवाणी से प्रेरणा दिया। इस प्रकार महाराजा मान्धाता काशी आकर तपस्या करने लगे।धनुर्मास (पौस महीना) के  अन्त मकर मास के प्रारंभ में  संक्रांति के विशेष पर्व के  दिन  उषाकाल में उन्होंने खिचड़ी बनाई और उसको दो भागों में ( एक भाग अतिथि के लिए और दूसरा स्वयं के  लिए) विभक्त करके रख दिया।तब अतिथि के रुप में साक्षात् शिव जी स्वयं प्रकट हो गये,तब राजा आश्चर्यचकित रह गए, और खिचड़ी पत्थर हो गया।

अतिथि रूप त्याग कर शिव जी प्रकट हुए --हे भक्त सुनो, यह पाषाणीय खिचड़ी ही शिव लिंग बन गया है।चारों युगों में इसके चार रुप होंगे।

सत्ययुग में नवरत्नमय, त्रेता में स्वर्णमय,द्वापर में रजतमय (चाँदी का) और कलियुग में शिलामय होकर यह शुभ मनोकामनाओं को प्रदान करेगा।दो भागों के हो जाने से  यह  हरिहरात्मक और शिवशक्त्यात्मक हो गया है।अन्न से निर्मित होने के कारण इसमें अन्नपूर्णा निवास करेगी।

इस लिंग के दर्शन पूजन से भक्त के गृह में अन्नपूर्णा सदा निवास करेगीं ।

इतना कह कर भगवान इसी लिंग में अन्तध्यार्न हो गये।

It has become monstrous and devotional to the two parts.Annapurna will reside in due to food being made from it.Annapurna will always stay in the devotee's house with the Darshan of this Linga.By saying so, God became indescribable in this gender.

औरंगजेब की करतूत --deeds of Aurangzeb

जब औरंगजेब बादशाह अज़मत और करामात की परीक्षा लेता हुआ सम्पूर्ण उत्तरीय भारत में मंदिरों और मूर्तियों को तोड़ता फोड़ता फिरा । विश्वनाथ जी के मंदिर को तोड़ने के बाद उसकी दृष्टि केदारेश्वर की ओर घुमा। सुनते हैं कि उस समय केदारेश्वर जी के मंदिर के उत्तर भाग में एक सिद्ध मुसलमान फकीर भौंरशाह रहता था। उसने बादशाह को केदार जी की ओर जाने से मना किया,पर बादशाह के मन में बात नहीं  बैठी और नन्दी तक पहुँच गया,कटार का  वार किया। लोगों का कहना है कि नन्दी के शरीर से खून की धारा बह निकली।

जो कुछ हुआ हो, पर कोई कारण ऐसा जरूर हुआ जिससे कि वह आगे न बढ़ सका, नहीं तो श्रीकेदारेश्वर के मन्दिर की भी वही दशा होती जो इस समय श्रीविश्वनाथ के प्राचीन मंदिर की है।When the Aurangzeb emperor examined Azmat and Karamat, the entire northern India broke the temples and idols and did not break it.
